PID: Promotion In Doubt

DUE BY 5/1/19

Grades 3- 7

The Department of Education promotion policy for students in grades 3 through 7 is as follows:

 

General education students in grades 3-7 and students with IEPs that specify standard promotion criteria should demonstrate sufficient progress toward meeting Common Core Learning Standards in ELA and Math.

 

Multiple measures of student performance should be reviewed to determine progress such as:

•          Course Grades

•          Report Cards

•          State Test Scores

•          Projects

•          Assignments

•          Portfolios

•          Other- Performance Based work

 

Special education students whose IEPs indicate modified promotion criteria must meet the standards on their IEPS.  These standards are unique to each student. Please refer to the student’s IEP.

 

For any student who is promotion in doubt, it is mandated that written notification be mailed to parents.  Please review your student’s work and portfolio to assist in identifying if he/she is promotion in doubt.

 

Please ask the guidance counselor to email verification they have marked the student PID.

 

 

Grade 8

 

General education students in grade 8, and students with IEPs that specify standard promotion criteria should demonstrate sufficient progress towards meeting Common Core Learning Standards in ELA and Math.  They MUST pass all core courses: ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science.

 

Multiple measures of student performance should be reviewed to determine progress such as:

•          Course Grades

•          Report Cards

•          State Test Scores

•          Projects

•          Assignments

•          Portfolios

•          Other- Performance Based work

 

Special education students whose IEPs indicate modified promotion criteria must meet the standards on their IEPS.  These standards are unique to each student. Please refer to the student’s IEP.

HS Students

For those students who are promotion-in-doubt in grades 9 - 12, it is mandated that written notification to parents must be mailed.  We are asking for your assistance in identifying these students.

 

According to the promotion policy, promotion in grades 9-12 is based on the following:

•          Successful completion of standards in academic subject areas

•          Accumulation of credits in the major subject areas

 

Students earn credits upon successful mastery and completion of subject specific course of study as demonstrated by a variety of evaluation strategies, homework, and class participation.

 

A specific number of credits have been established for promotion from grade to grade.

 

Grade 9 to 10: A minimum of 8 credits (including credits in major subject areas)

Grade 10 to 11: A minimum of 20 credits (including 4 required in English and 4 required in social studies)

Grade 11 to 12: A minimum of 30 credits

Graduation: 44 credits in the appropriate areas and specific assessments dependent on the year of entry to high school.  For specific information regarding your child’s requirements, please contact his/her affiliated school                   

 

Consult with the student’s Guidance Counselor at his/her school to verify credits, and update him/her on the status of the student’s current coursework and progress.  Please ask the guidance counselor to email verification they have marked the student PID.
